Marketing Milk and Disease: an Eye Opening Presentation on Dairy and It’s Health Effects

This is an incredible video by Dr. McDougall on the hidden facts of dairy. While I don’t expect everyone to watch the entire video (it’s 45 minutes), try and at least click around a little bit. Skim through it. There is a lot of information in the video that is quite disturbing and very important to our health and longevity.

If you are into making sure this is factual, the studies are referenced on the bottom of the screen when facts are displayed.

There isn’t any blood or gore in the video, so you have nothing to worry about there; just straight facts.

In a reply to my comment on a different post you have provided me with some links to Dr. McDougall. I have never heard of him before and checking out the links, I’ve been wondering what motivates his believes and opinions. Can’t say that I understand his motives, but he is misinformed and just plain wrong about many things that seem to make up his core believes:
“High Calories” DO NOT cause obesity, diabetes, heart disease or cancer, not a single study has been able to confirm that. Starvation diets are not sustainable in the long term and therefore ineffective. Calories In – Calories Out is a myth, the law Of thermodynamics has also never been proven. What is eaten along with the level of activity is far more important. That said, it’s not about burning calories with the activity, its about hormone response and stabilization, as it is with the foods consumed.

“High Fat” DOES NOT cause obesity, diabetes, cancer, NOR DOES “High Saturated Fat” cause heart attacks or stroke, there simply is no scientific evidence for this. It has been proven that arteriosclerosis is caused by inflammation and NOT cholesterol. McDougall’s theory is based on the “Lipid Hypothesis”, which was promoted by Ancel Keys and then passed as nutritional gospel by George McGovern and the “United States Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs” in the late sixties, under great protest by the experts of the era.

“High Protein” does not cause kidney damage, high carbohydrate diets place a far greater burden on the kidney’s then protein. And for that matter protein does not cause gout. Correlation is not necessarily causation, failing kidneys can’t process the by-products of protein and may lead to gout, as well as further kidney failure. Protein wasn’t the cause, it’s simply the end result of failing kidneys.

All this is from the first 3 minutes of the youtube presentation and I could go on, but there really is no point. Dr. McDougall’s believes are flawed, his presentation is flawed, so how can his advise be any better.

I would agree on the information about the dairy industry, but again he makes no distinction between commercial dairy, organic dairy or better yet raw dairy. His whole premise is too general and therefore flawed. I’m not saying that dairy consumption is absolutely essential, but there is a tremendous difference between a slice of processed cheese and cheese made naturally from raw milk. Most people with milk allergies report no problems with raw milk. As per the “Heiner syndrome”, its a very rare disease and therefore an emotionally charged comment. It is an allergic reaction to milk, however I have not been able to find any info on whether it is equally caused by raw milk and pasteurized commercial milk.

To consume natural whole foods is the key to good health, it has nothing to do with plants foods or animal foods. It’s the difference of organic broccoli versus chemically sprayed broccoli that matters. It’s the difference between a piece of meat from a pasture fed and healthy animal versus McDonald’s. It’s the difference of fresh raw milk form your trusted farmer or mass produced commercial pasteurized milk.

Have you ever considered how we could have evolved as herbivores? How could we be as inventive and productive if we had to spend the whole day eating. Animal based foods, are far more energy dense allowing for smaller portions and less frequency of meals. And I’m talking about fat, not protein, good fats are far more available out of animal products then plant sources. Besides ruminants are vats that ferment abundant cellulose into volatile short chain fatty acids for the animals energy requirements, they only ingest carbs but don’t consume them.

Well I never said we are herbivores. We are omnivores. But that doesn’t mean we should be eating the bulk of our calories from fat. None of our close relatives in the ape family do that. That is because it takes more energy to acquire than it produces usually. In the ape family, it is a sign of dominance or starvation to go on hunting parties. The bulk of our calories have always been and WILL always be plant foods. That is why our jaws move side to side, and why we can hydrolyze starch granules.

Starch is literally the fuel of civilization because it provides a calorie dense meal and very little energy to acquire it when compared to meat. Starch can be stored in winter for long periods of time and still retain it’s nutritional punch, where as meat requires smoking. This is important: civilization could NEVER have come to it’s point today without starch.

Matt ….. seriously, you need to distinguish between fact and theory. Your links simply just prove my point that nobody really knows: “It is, however, impossible to conclude that adopting a starch-rich diet was such an important event in human evolution”. And as I’ve already mentioned …. who really cares, there has been so much more recent anecdotal evidence already, as well as current studies that show the dangers of chronically elevated insulin. There is little mystery about what causes chronically elevated insulin, its carbohydrates and the general over consumption of too much of the easily digestible kind.

I don’t know much about most of our ape relatives digestive system and you obviously know even less to make your statements. I can categorically state however that gorillas, whose DNA is 98.6% similar to humans, consume the majority of their calories form fat. Gorillas have a very large digestives system and just as ruminants, ferment the fibre they eat to fat for their energy needs. Humans would not be able to survive on a gorilla diet and furthermore feeding captive gorillas to much starch, such as bananas, may lead to obesity and diabetes.

Fat does not take a lot of energy to acquire Matt, where do you get that from. On the contrary, converting fibre to fat is a very inefficient process. That’s why gorillas and ruminants have to eat vast quantities of cellulose. In fact gorillas consumes about 1 pound of food for every 10 lbs of body weight and that means they eat approximately 8 hours a day …. that’s a full time job. Can you imagine eating that much? For me that would mean 16 lbs of food in 8 hours.

Starch has never been the majority of calories consumed by traditional cultures, that simply is not true. Fat has made up the majority of calories for most traditional cultures, especially those in temperate climates. Fat is the most energy dense food …. period …. and your argument still does not consider any of the problems related to chronically elevated insulin.

As per the jaws moving sideways ….. sure we have the mobility, but if that happens during chewing, it’s called temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). Our jaws are not like cows, Matt.

Andi – It’s not Dr. McDougall that’s misinformed. It’s you. If you don’t believe Dr. McDougall, maybe you could believe the experts at Harvard?

There’s plenty of evidence that saturated fat leads to heart attacks and strokes. Inflammation plays a role, too.
